What is happening to UK racing when racecourses cater for just one trainer and his one horse?
I refer of course to Kauto Star in this case. On Monday, Paul Nichholls said the horse would not run if the going did not change. As a result Ascot started watering on Tuesday.
Now I read in RP today Paul Nicholls has inspected the course personally and declared he is satisfied with the course conditions and has said the horse will run. Now we have certain priviledged trainers determining and dictating the going to suit their star horses. The other trainers have to run their horses on going as such as Nicholls has predetermined.
It seems to me that Nicholls has become the self appointed Clerk of the Course for Ascot this Saturday.
Should the course have been watered just to satisfy Paul Nicholls or should all horses take their fair chance depending on the weather?
In my opinion it is going too far (forgive the pun) and all horses should take their chance on the day. If Nicholls doesn't like it, he shouldn't run the horse and let another horse take the race glory instead.
What do others think? Should racecourses water just to satisfy one trainer and his horse? What about the other horses which might have preferred the going as it was? It doesn't seem fair to me, I'm afraid.
Maybe Ascot are more concerned about the income from Kauto Star running, than giving a fair days racing for all the horses.
